Trainee Recruitment
City work, country life. Only 90 miles from London. Wilsons. A law firm going the extra mile.
"An extremely well-oiled machine"
Wilsons is a specialist law firm advising wealthy and successful people - from peers to popstars - on the particular legal issues they face. We have one of the largest and most highly regarded teams of private client lawyers in the UK.
The 2007 Chambers Legal Directory describes us as having "a terrific reputation and cracking client list" assuring our position as a "leader in the field". We have been based in the beautiful cathedral city of Salisbury in the South West since our foundation over 270 years ago. We combine heritage with leading-edge law.
Many of our lawyers come from London firms and many of our clients continue to be London-based. This ensures an exceptional quality of work within a beautiful location - quality of life is crucial to us.
"Extraordinary"
Our clients expect quality in the advice given and the service received and that is why we aim to employ the highest quality people. The work we do for clients is best described as 'quirky' because of the issues they face:
- One of our clients has recently found works of art they didn't know they had - worth £15m
- We act for the family who inspired Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited
One of our partners advised on a case where a live collection of owls was kidnapped. - We are supporting one of our clients in selling their stamp collection - worth approximately £12m
Think and multi-task
We look for applicants who have effective verbal and written communication skills, an ability to multi-task effectively, think clearly. We expect successful applicants to have a minimum of 260 UCAS points (excluding AS levels) and a 2.1 degree or better.
We have a strategy committed to growth of which expansion through organic recruitment is an important part. We have a successful record of retaining trainees who qualify, indeed six partners trained with the firm.
Your potential
Career development and effective training is of key importance to us and we will help you achieve your potential by offering in-house training from a range of third parties covering everything from "soft skills" and IT to specific legal issues.
We work on career planning with everyone throughout the firm and have been praised by IIP for our highly effective mentoring programme. If you show willingness and aptitude you will be given responsibility in the early stage of your career. In fact is is likely that you will be dealing with clients in your first week.
A two year training contract gives you four seats of six months in our different sectors. We try hard to ensure that you get the seat that you choose: Tax and Trusts, Property, Probate, Charities, Family, Company Commercial, Employment and Litigation.

"Having only been training at Wilsons for a few weeks, I've been particularly surprised at how soon I was doing 'real' legal work- talking with clients, corresponding with other law firms and attending meetings, but always with help and support if I need it. My supervisors are making sure that I get to see a real variety of work and have gone out of their way to involve me in work they know I have a particular interest in."
Tim Fullerlove studied Philosophy at Southampton University and joined Wilsons as a trainee in 2006.
"Wilsons is ideal for me as it offers the quality of London work without the hassle of London life. I knew that I didn't want to live and work in London and yet I still wanted to have the opportunity of undertaking a varied and challenging training contract. Wilsons is able to offer this while allowing me to enjoy a lifestyle that makes the most of the surrounding countryside and coast."
