Jonathan Stephens - managing partner

Photograph of Jonathan StephensJonathan became managing partner in May 2006. He also continues to devote part of his time to legal practice, specialising in tax, finance, and business arrangements for commercial clients, and tax and estate planning for private clients with business interests. He regularly advises on matters with an international aspect and assists offshore trust companies with commercial transactions and other arrangements.

Jonathan works closely with partners from other areas of the practice and also receives referrals from external tax consultancies.

Recent work has included:

  • Devising and implementing share incentive arrangements for associated UK and US companies, which involved linking tax-approved share schemes across both jurisdictions
  • Devising a new ownership structure for a commercial aerodrome to mitigate Inheritance Tax and the exposure to commercial risk
  • Working with the charities team on a £25m environmental project
  • Film contract for a TV series at a stately home
  • Fine art sales

Jonathan has an unusual breadth of experience. After qualifying as a solicitor in 1980, he worked with Malpas Simmons accountants (now part of Smith & Williamson) in their tax department. He joined Wilsons in 1983, specialising in private client tax and asset planning, and subsequently moved to the commercial side of the practice.
